Spiritual significance
R. A. Roberts and C. P. Mountford tell the story of "The Banishment of the Cuckoos" (1968 ed.), p. 36. This story explains how cuckoos, for refusing to build their own nests and raising their own chicks, were expelled by all other birds to the north. From there they return every spring and every autumn they fly back again.
