Australian bird habitats:
Crop

Description of habitat

Commercial crops, while growing, can offer shelter and, once ripe, a food resource. Obviously, crops are only temporary habitats and the bird population will vary greatly with the seasons. Some bird species use crops only as a food source, others actually live (and in some cases nest) in the fields, as long as the plants growing there provide them with shelter (and farm machinery does not destroy their habitat).

Some bird species specialise in foraging on fallow fields. These are listed separately below.

Example of a crop that can attract birds, either to hide in the dense growth or to feed on the seeds - sorghum harvest on a broadacre farm

Fallow fields

Several bird species specialise in foraging on fallow fields. Some of the same species can also be found in the gibber plains of the Australian interior.
