Description of habitat |
Australia's most prominent floodplains are found in the tropical north of the country, where abundant rainwater from falls in the wet season floods the low-lying land towards the northern coastline. These floodplains form one particular type of ephemeral wetland. During the wet season these floodplains attract enormous numbers of aquatic birds. During the dry season part of this land will be grassland, the rest will be mudflats. The well-known, densely vegetated billabongs are found further upstream.
