Greater Spotted Eagles are a migratory Eurasian species.
Their breeding range extends from eastern Europe to
far-eastern Siberia, between ca. 45-60 degrees latitude.
They overwinter mostly around the eastern Mediterranean
Sea, Asia Minor, parts of Arabia, the River Nile valley
and the east-African highlands, as well as and area
ranging from the Indian subcontinent to far
south-eastern Asia (Malaysia). Others overwinter in
(near-)coastal eastern China.
During their migration they can be found in areas in between.
In Europe, Greater Spotted Eagles breed in eastern Europe,
from the south-western tip of Finland via the Baltic states
southward to the north-western coastline of the Black Sea.
From there the breeding range extends eastward into European
Russia and on into Asia.
In Europe there are overwintering populations around the
Pyrenees and the Alps and along the northern Greek border.
During their migration, some Great Spotted Eagles disperse
throughout much of central Europe and to the western
Mediterranean coastline.
Greater Spotted Eagles have a preference for forest, often
interspersed with rivers and marshes.
