Eurasian Dotterels are small waders. During the breeding season, their plumage is dimorphic, i.e., males and females are slightly different. Both sexes have a dark cap, white supercilia and white cheek patches. The neck and back are grey, with thin creamy-buff edges on the wing coverts. Both sexes have a prominent white horizontal stripe across the chest, with a very narrow black stripe right above it. Under the white stripe the front is rufous, darkening towards the lower parts of the belly. The vent and undertail are white. The difference between the sexis is that breeding males are overall more inconspicuous(!) than breeding females. The grey neck is pale, the belly patch is slightly vermiculated, pale rufous and the belly patch is inconspicuously dark-grey, while in breeding females the neck is homogeneously grey, the frontal patch is bright-rufous, turning black towards the lower belly. This inverse dimorphism is a reflection of the fact that males take on the majority of the nest duties. In eclipse the two sexes look alike, with a dark cap, buff supercilia, a dark-grey back with brown edges on the wing coverts. The front is mostly slightly vermiculated grey, with an off-white belly and a thin white horizontal chest stripe. In-flight the underwings are lightgrey and the upperwings mid-grey, with darker-grey primaries (with a narrow white leading edge). The wings do not have a wing bar. The irises of both sexes are dark-brown. The short bill is dark-grey; legs and feet are greenish-yellow. Juveniles are very similar to non-breeding adults.

Eurasian Dotterels breeding in Arctic Eurasia, all the way from Scotland to Siberia and even occasionally in Alaska. They overwinter in near-coastal northern Africa, around the Mediterranean Sea and in northern Arabia. During their migration, in between breeding grounds and winter quarters, they are hard to spot, possibly because flying at night.

In Europe, except for individual sites in the Pyrenees, the Appenin Mountains and the eastern Alps, Eurasian Dotterels breed primarily in the high mountains of Scotland, Norway and eastward from there, via the Kola peninsula, into Arctic north-western Russia. Elsewhere, they can be found during their migration from northern Africa. The most prominent of these flight paths leads from coastal Morocco via the eastern half of Iberia and parts of France and the Benelux countries to the British Isles and Scandinavia.

Eurasian Dotterels are one of those species of waders that have diverged and prefer to live in relatively dry habitats, away from water. During the breeding season Eurasian Dotterels have a preference for high mountains, scree, tundra, or open grassland, usually with low cover.
