Complete index of all European bird species
This list comprises all bird species presented in most bird guides. NOTE: Only birds native to Europe are listed here. No introduced species are listed or shown.
European bird species are listed alphabetically by their English common names (e.g., "Blackbird, Common"), by their German common names (e.g., "Amsel") and by their scientific names (e.g., "Turdus merula"). To search for a bird species with a composite name, such as "Common Blackbird", go to the letter "B" for "Blackbird, Common". Alternatively, use the search engine in the header above.

For all practical purposes the NEW, modern names for birds, as listed above, should be used.
Alternative (often old) names are given for many bird species on their respective pages. They are provided for the benefit of those who have grown up with the old names. Use the search engine to find the bird species under its modern name. Note that many old names are not unique (marked with "*"), some are misnomers and in some cases new scientific research has led to entirely new names for bird species (including their scientific classifications). Wherever known to us, we list both the German and English names of species, together with the scientific name. This table is in alphabetical order of the ENGLISH common names.
