Physical description Click here for a physical description Bonelli's Eagles are medium-sized eagles. Their chin and gapes are grey, while the sides of the head are grey with brown streaking and the crown is dark-brown with some grey streaking. The front, from chin to undertail coverts, is light-grey, with some dark streaking on the breast. Apart from a white spot between the wings, the back is dark-brown. The wing coverts have lighter-brown edge lining, giving the birds a scalloped appearance. The underwings have grey coverts with dark streaks, black central bars and mottled grey-brown flight feathers. The wing shape when soaring is squarish, while the tail has a square tip with a black terminal band. The thighs are feathered with grey plumage. The irises are yellow. The hooked beak is grey, with a darker tip and a yellow gape and cere. The lower legs and feet are greyish-yellow. Juveniles are light-grey with brown underwing coverts and grey flight feathers with black tips. The grey undertail does not have a terminal band yet.

Bonelli's Eagles are often found in (near-)coastal, mountainous areas of the Mediterranean, from parts of Spain, Mauretania and the Atlas Mountain range, Sardinia, Sicily and the southern tip of Italy to the eastern Adriatic coastline, parts of Greece (including Crete) and to the western and southern coastline of Asia Minor. They also reside in sub-Saharan Africa, parts of the Middle East and onwards into South Asia, as far to the East as Indonesia and Timor Leste. In Oman, as in other parts of the Arabian peninsula, Bonelli's Eagle is often found in mountainous terrain, usually not far from the coastline.

Sightings Click here for sighting information A sub-adult Bonelli's Eagle was spotted by us flying low above the ground (and thereby easy to identify) at Ras Al-Hadd, on the eastern tip of Oman, in May 2010. No photo was obtained at the time.
