Pico Veleta 30-m telescope

In the Sierra Nevada (southern Spain), at an altitude of 2870 m, IRAM is operating a 30-m sub-millimetre telescope. It is one of the largest of its kind and has therefore a very high sensitivity to detect extremely faint signals. It operates at wavelengths of about 1 to 4 mm. Below a shot of the telescope at night.

Operating at mm wavelengths, this telescope's strengths lie in observations of molecular gas (via many different line transitions, such as those of the CO molecule) and of continuum emission of cold dust.
