Australian bird habitats:
Lagoon/saltmarsh

Aboriginal names: "coleepod", "connepra", "cullaculla", "darrung", "tarun"

Description of habitat

Saltmarshes and lagoons offer various aquatic waders and fish hunters ideal hunting ground, with prey to be found in the saltwater and in the soil below. In some respects saltmarshes are similar to intertidal wetlands, but in saltmarshes the water is always saline.

A lagoon is defined as a pool of shallow saline water separated from a major body of water (sea) by a narrow barrier. Note that the term "lagoon" is often used incorrectly to describe a (semi-)permanent waterhole or rockpool.
